My daughter Sage and I are close, and one quality we share in common is imagination.
Just before Sage’s 3rd birthday, her mother and I separated. For a few years after that, I struggled to secure a job and living situation that would allow me to remain close to my little girl.
Those were difficult times, but regardless of the challenges we faced, I made it a point to tell Sage a bedtime story every night she stayed with me, usually once a week. These fantastic tales were improvised, but often inspired by real events happening in our daily lives.
As Sage grew older, she began to chime in more with her own voice and perspective, creating these tales by my side on her way to sleep at night.
It’s a tradition we continue to this day.
Posted on this site are some of our tales. As you read, you may notice these are not your father’s bedtime stories. Life can be hard for the characters, both adults and children alike. There are families, friends and neighbors who have different backgrounds and lifestyles, with a wide-range of struggles as well as abilities to cope with them. Everyone is finding their way.
Binding the characters in these stories together is love, a yearning to get along, or maybe the simple desire to avoid being bitten by a werewolf …
We hope you enjoy.
